Unusual Sioux Pictorial Beaded Hide Tobacco Bag
elaborately stitched in opaque, translucent and faceted metal beadwork, with an American and Cuban flag on the front, the reverse, with typical geometric motifs, the cut hide panel below wrapped in dyed porcupine quillwork; trimmed with tin cone pendants inserted with horsehair.
length with fringe 38in.
he representation of Cuban flag is a highly unique feature of this bag. It’s likely that the bag was created by a Sioux woman for a member of her family serving in the Spanish American war, 1898 to 1901. At the time Cuba was ruled by Spain and the US aided Cuba in it’s quest for independence.
