Native American Bandolier Ceremonial Bag Beaded Ojibwe Chippewa Cherokee. A very attractive beaded bandolier of Native American decent with field of blue beads with a prominent yellow and red falcon (rare to see bandolier with animal or bird). Sides decorative with geometric yellow and red beaded designs. Blue cloth back and leather fringe with glass beads. It is beyond our expertise to identify which tribe or region this bandolier origination. Dates to the 1st half 20th century.

Satin Purses / Bags. High quality satin is made of silk threads but it can also be made of nylon or polyester. It was a popular fabric during the Art Deco era and continues to be used for both bag exteriors and liners.

Hide Bags

Hide Bags. Hide is treated animal skin and is the foundation for most Native American beadwork. The most common hides used are buffalo and deer.

Below are some examples of hide bags including a Northern Plains pipe bag and a stars and stripe bag from the second quarter of the 20th century.

Pictorial Beaded Bags

Some of the most collectible bags and purses are pictorial beaded bags. These were made in both America and Europe and each had their own styles. European bags would often be made using micro beads and would often depict scenery. They were mainly evening purses and would be delicate. Some would close with drawstring while others would have metal clasps. Native American bags were usually larger and more practical. They would often be used to carry tobacco and medicine. Scenes would often have animals in them such as horses and deer.

The purse is finished with a metal frame having faux stones and a chain handle. One of the hinges is broken. Total dimensions: 20 in. high x 8 1/4 wide. Bag body: 11 in. high x 8 1/4 wide.

Translucent Beads

Translucent beads are those where the light goes through them. They have more of a sparkle than opaque, which often appear matt. Translucent beads allow background colors and threads to show so when they are sewn onto fabric, the color may look different to how they look when loose depending on the color of the ground.
